Sir Leonard Bernard Bogart was a basset hound. Anyone who has ever owned such a beast will confirm that they’re not exactly the most intelligent dogs on the planet, but they are the most tenacious. Get something in their heads, and they will hold it. Get a scent in their snouts, and they will follow it. Nose to the ground in South Carolina, a determined basset may not look up again until Nebraska, and then only to smell someone’s cooking. From my time with Leonard I knew he wasn’t any different, so when Rick finally quit waving his gun in my face, instead of relief I felt a wave of despair. What was I thinking? Why hadn’t I at least tried to climb the stairs with my chair? Instead, I’d burned precious time going back for the dog and following him to the door. And what had I achieved?

As I sat snuffling in the semi-dark of a dead millionaire’s basement, I pictured her lame-brained geriatric dog poking around through the trees and sidling along a side street somewhere oblivious of the danger I was in. He’d probably forgotten me entirely.

I was really feeling sorry for myself when I heard a loud crash upstairs. The short man was talking to Tom and it wasn’t pretty. I wondered if the nephew and heir-apparent to the Schmeckfeffer potato chip dynasty was having second thoughts about his friend.

“There was absolutely no cause to bring the girl into this,” said Rick.

“She saw me throw the dog in the trunk. She followed me here to talk to my aunt.”

“So why didn’t you tell her the old lady’s out of town.”

“I already had her half out of the freezer.”

“And exactly what’s that about?” said Rick.

“The freezer? Are you kidding? I had to do something with the body while I was at work.”

“Okay, let me go over it once more,” said Rick, louder now. They were directly above me.

“I need another drink,” said Tom, and I followed his footsteps across the floor while Rick talked.

“You wake up one morning and decide you can’t take it anymore, waiting for those millions to be yours is making you nuts. The old lady is making you nuts. Your token job at the office is making you nuts. Am I right so far?”

“It wasn’t that premeditated,” said Tom.

Rick ignored him. “So you wake up and knock your Aunt in the head, and then go on about your daily routine: going to work, even dropping the stupid dog off at the pet store? Are you insane?”

“What was I supposed to do?”

“You were supposed to not kill anybody. At least not until me or Jocko gave you the word.”

“It just happened. She was nagging at me again about finding a girl, settling down—”

“I don’t want to hear it. The least you could’ve done is call me this morning. I could’ve had the whole mess cleared up. Now I’ve gotta stay up all night.”

“And what about the girl?”

“What about the girl, Tom? What do you
